ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The search for a new Big Red women’s basketball coach is underway at Cornell.

University officials say head women’s basketball coach Dayna Smith is out after 21 seasons leading the team. It’s not the first change at a major program at Cornell, as head football coach David Archer was dismissed in November. Smith leaves as the longest-tenured coach in the Ivy League and career Cornell wins leader, despite going just 224-345 in her time with the program.

“Dayna Smith has led the Big Red women’s basketball program for more than two decades with integrity and drive, dedicating herself to developing successful student-athletes on and off the court,” said Meakem Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education, Dr. Nicki Moore. “She is a well-respected coach, a well-liked colleague and a true ambassador for the game of basketball. I thank her for her service to Cornell athletics and wish her the very best. Coach Smith will always be an important part of this program’s history.”

Associate head coach Val Klopfer will serve in an interim role while a national search for Smith’s replacement is conducted.
