ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A Tompkins County nonprofit is getting support from the state.

On April 21, the DEC announced $196,908 in funding for The Center for Community Transportation, which includes Ithaca Carshare, Bikeshare, and BikeWalk Tompkins.

The money will help fund a study with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County to research the public health benefits of micro-mobility and multimodal transit.

Micro-mobility refers to small, lightweight vehicles used for short trips that are easy to store, such as traditional bicycles, e-bikes, and electric scooters. Multimodal transit means using two or more different types of transportation in a single trip.

Officials say micro-mobility and multimodal transit are well-suited for cities and densely populated towns, and both help reduce traffic congestion and emissions.

The funding comes from the DEC’s Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant program, which also awarded $200,000 to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cortland County for the Blocks in Bloom program.
