UPDATE: In a statement, Geneva Mayor Jim Cecere has reportedly asked Councilman Whitfield to consider stepping down.

Cecere says Whitfield is entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence, but the uncertainty of his future limits the City Council’s ability to fully function as a legislative body.

GENEVA, NY (607NewsNow) – A Geneva City councilman is accused of selling drugs.

On January 7, Ahmad Whitfield was arrested following an ongoing narcotics trafficking investigation in the Geneva area.

It was a joint operation with the State Police, Geneva Police, the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office. Troopers say Whitfield sold cocaine and fentanyl to another person.

City officials acknowledged the arrest but declined to comment further, citing the legal process and Whitfield’s rights.

Whitfield, who was reelected in November as an at-large councilmember, is charged with three felonies for criminal sale and possession of controlled substances.

State Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
