ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The Ithaca Police Department (IPD) is investigating counterfeit cash.

According to IPD, fake money was recently used at multiple local businesses.

Authorities warn businesses and consumers to examine bills carefully, as they may pass the standard counterfeit-detection pen test. Check for duplicate serial numbers, security threads, watermarks, printing quality, and unusual paper texture.

Anyone who believes they’ve received a phony bill is asked to avoid returning it to the person who presented it, nor attempt to confront or detain the individual. When it’s safe to do so, document the suspect’s description, save relevant receipts and surveillance footage, and contact IPD.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ithaca Police Department.
