Ithaca mourns loss of former Mayor John Gutenberger

ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Flags are flying half-staff at Ithaca City Hall.

On August 29, former Mayor John “Gutie” Gutenberger passed away at the age of 84.

Gutenberger served from 1984 to 1990 and is credited with supporting cooperation across local institutions and strengthening city government.

“The city mourns the loss of Mayor John ‘Gutie’ Gutenberger,” said Mayor Robert Cantelmo. “Mayor Gutenberger helped kindle a strong working relationship between the city and Cornell University and was an early proponent of professional administration for city government. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Let us remember the important contributions and service of this Ithaca institution.”

Calling hours will be held at Saint Catherine of Siena Church in Ithaca from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on September 4.
