Ithaca shares winter changes, reminders about city parks and trails

ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Ithaca reminds outdoor enthusiasts about cold-weather changes at area parks and trails.

Officials say trails within city parks receive limited maintenance during winter, and users should proceed at their own risk.

In particular, the Cayuga Waterfront Trail is not maintained during winter months, except for limited portions within Cass Park and Stewart Park, as staffing and time allow. The city has completed winterization of all seasonal bathrooms at both Cass and Stewart, including the Splash Pad Restrooms. However, the bathroom at Cass Park Ice Rink will be open during building hours.

The bathroom at Stewart Park’s Wharton Studio Building will be open during Stewart Park hours, which have changed for the winter. For public safety reasons, Stewart Park is now only open from dawn to dusk. The city notes increased vandalism, illegal dumping, and other after-hours activity at the park. The Ithaca Police Department is increasing patrols.

No one is permitted on frozen bodies of water within or connected to any city park, including lakes, ponds, creeks, inlets, etc. Although park playgrounds and the Ithaca Skatepark are open year-round, residents are advised to be cautious and review conditions before use.

Trail walkers are reminded to keep dogs leashed, stay on designated paths, and give wildlife ample space.

If you see any illegal, dangerous, or potentially life-threatening activity, call 911.

Eating snow cones or snow cream can be a winter delight, if done safely

Others might want to try "sugar on snow," a taffy-like confection made by pouring hot maple syrup onto a plate of snow.
