MARATHON, NY (607NewsNow) – The Marathon Central School District is cutting 29 positions.
On June 3, the staff reductions were made official at the final Board of Education meeting of the school year.
Four of the 29 positions eliminated were retirees, and one was not a permanent position. The move comes after the district recently discovered a $3 million budget deficit. The positions will officially be eliminated on June 30.
According to the Cortland Standard, the Marathon Teachers Association is considering a vote of no confidence in Superintendent Jamie Coppola.
Coppola, who was hired as superintendent in June 2025, addressed the budget deficit on 607 This Morning in April. You can listen to the full interview here.
