FREETOWN, NY (607NewsNow) — A MAVAC ambulance has been damaged.

While responding to an EMS call in Freetown around 7:20 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, the Marathon Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps says their ambulance was sideswiped by a tractor towing an oversized farm machine on McGraw-Marathon Rd. According to MAVAC Chief John Tillotson, the vehicle wasn’t using its emergency lights and siren “because the nature of the incident.”

“The force of the collision caused the ambulance to veer sharply to the right where it struck the box-beam guardrail on the bridge on the right side of the roadway resulting in additional damage to the ambulance box down the passenger side. The farm tractor operator, who was apparently unaware the collision had occurred, continued traveling south down the road without stopping,” Tillotson said in a Facebook post.

“MAVAC was already well into the process of purchasing a third ambulance to expand our EMS fleet as our call volume continues to escalate each year. The sales team at Northeast Rescue Vehicles in Syracuse has agreed to do everything possible to expedite the delivery of our new MAVAC ambulance which we hope to have in service within the next 30-40 days. This would allow us to return to normal EMS operations while 1651 is out of service being repaired,” Tillotson added.

Ron’s Auto Body is currently assessing damage to the ambulance, which included the driver’s side door and mirror and the “ambulance box itself.”
