VIRGIL, NY (607NewsNow) – One person is recovering, and a family pet is safe after a fire in Cortland County.

On January 10, the Virgil Fire Department responded to a home on Route 392 just before 3 p.m. for a closet fire.

When units arrived, all occupants were out of the building, although one person sustained minor burns trying to put out the blaze before firefighters arrived.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire in about 15 minutes and rescue a cat.

The Virgil Fire Department credits the occupant with helping to limit the spread of the fire by shutting the closet and bedroom doors.

The Red Cross is assisting the occupants until the building is ready for reoccupation.
