Missing dementia patient found safe in Ithaca woods


ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – An Ithaca woman with dementia is safe after getting lost in the woods overnight.

Tompkins County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a vulnerable missing 69-year-old on Winston Drive around 9 a.m. on Sunday. A concerned neighbor made the call and assisted authorities with information from a Wi-Fi tracker. The tracker last placed the woman walking into a wooded area on Meadowlark Drive around 8 p.m. on Saturday.

A search party consisting of the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and Cornell University Police located the woman about a quarter of a mile from her last known location behind the SPCA of Tompkins County. Police say the woman was in the elements overnight for about 13 hours. She was assisted out of the woods and transported to Cayuga Medical Center for treatment.
