CAYUGA HEIGHTS, NY (607NewsNow) — A major NYSEG project is beginning.

Crews are working on upgrades to the Cayuga Heights substation. The $4.7 million project includes the addition of a 34.5 kV capacitor bank, which the energy company says will deliver more reliable electricity to over 5,100 customers.

“Strengthening the reliability of our electric grid is important for both developing more housing and for long-term economic growth,” Ithaca Town Supervisor Rod Howe said. “This project represents a smart investment in Ithaca’s energy future.”

Work on the project started in March and will be completed in 2027, NYSEG said.

“The upgrades to the Cayuga Heights Substation will have a real benefit for our customers in Ithaca,” NYSEG President Marc Geaumont said. “Substation upgrades improve reliability across the entire grid and help ensure that homes, businesses, and other facilities have power when they need it most. This project is part of a nearly $46 million initiative to upgrade multiple substations throughout the Ithaca community.”

Funding for the project comes from the Public Service Commission’s recent approval of NYSEG’s rate case.

“In addition to reliability improvements underway NYSEG is proposing to invest $16 billion in the grid under its current Powering NY rate proposal. These investments will modernize aging infrastructure so that customers see improved reliability, efficiency, and resiliency in an era of more extreme weather,” according to a press release.
