CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A federal official is recognizing healthcare expansion in Cortland.

On May 4, Senator Chuck Schumer visited the Crown City to officially cut the ribbon at the new Cortland County Mental Health Department building.

Staff moved into the newly renovated building, which had been vacant, on Port Watson Street in February. Schumer helped deliver nearly $5 million in federal funding for the project over the last four years.

“For families and farmers in Cortland County and Central NY, distance and lack of resources should never be a barrier to getting the mental healthcare you need,” said Schumer. “When local leaders came to me four years ago asking for help to transform a vacant building into a site of new hope, I promised I wouldn’t stop fighting until they got every penny they needed to build the mental health facility Cortland deserves.”

The new location is twice the size of the old one, which also lacked modern necessities, such as sufficient high-speed internet access and critical disability accommodations. According to Schumer’s Office, over 1,000 patients are treated in Cortland County every year.
