HOMER, NY (607NewsNow) – Fire officials are preparing to say goodbye to a lifetime member in Homer.

On January 17, calling hours for Ralph Thornton take place from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Donald Barber Funeral Home.

Memorial services will immediately follow with honors provided by the Homer Fire Department and the U.S. Army. Thornton, who served as a member of Homer FD for over 50 years, passed away last Thursday at age 86. The village’s municipal ice rink was recently dedicated in his honor.

Meantime, Homer FD is mourning the loss of another key figure.

On January 12, the department announced that life member and former President Jerry Yacavone passed away, following the recent deaths of Thornton and former Chief Mahlon Irish, Jr., all within a month of each other.
