OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) – While residents in Tioga County are feeling the effects of SNAP benefit cutbacks, lawmakers are stepping up.

The Legislature is planning to provide $100,000 from the county’s contingent fund to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, pending final approval of a resolution and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

“Tioga County recognizes the very real challenges our residents are facing,” said Legislative Chair Martha Sauerbrey. “With rising food costs and disruptions in federal support, it is essential that we act swiftly and compassionately. The well-being of our community guides every decision we make, and this partnership with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier ensures families have access to basic necessities.”

The conditions of the proposed MOU ensure the money will be used to bolster food distribution efforts to Tioga County residents and requires reporting from the Food Bank of the Southern Tier to show how the funds are used to meet that end.

“This collaboration demonstrates what government and community partners can achieve when we work together with empathy, urgency, and purpose,” said County Administrator Jackson Bailey II. “The Legislature is responding to the needs of its citizens.”

The resolution, which is expected to pass, heads to a vote on November 12.
