ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Representatives for Flock Safety are in Ithaca.

Tonight, you can voice your concerns about privacy and how data from the company’s license plate readers and security cameras is being used in Tompkins County. Flock reps will attend the Tompkins County Legislature meeting, which will feature a customary public comment period.

For its part, Flock has maintained that only the law enforcement agency it is contracting with has access to the data collected. Unlike other corporations, Flock charges for its service and does not retain the data.

Legislator Rich John, who chairs the Public Safety Committee, says it’s important for the community to understand, particularly those calling for the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office to end its relationship with Flock, that it is not the only local law enforcement agency working with the company.

While the technology has done good in the community, including in the rescue of a 91-year-old vulnerable adult who went missing in late August, John, like others, still has concerns with how the data could potentially be misused. He’d like to see all the local agencies utilizing Flock to enter in an agreement.

The Tompkins County Legislature meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Legislature Chambers, located at 121 East Court Street.
