Two dead in Route 17 tractor trailer collision in Nichols; victims identified

UPDATE: State Police have identified the victims as 45-year-old Frank Dempaire, of Reading, PA, and 45-year-old Elize Carlos, of Newark, NJ. 

 

NICHOLS, NY (607NewsNow) – State Police are investigating a deadly crash in Tioga County.

On September 8, a tractor-trailer traveling east on Route 17 rear-ended a passenger car around 4:30 a.m. in Nichols.

Two people in the car died from their injuries; the tractor-trailer driver was not hurt. The identities of the deceased have not been released, pending family notification.

Troopers say the investigation is still in its “preliminary stages.”

Eastbound Route 17 was closed for several hours between exits 61 and 62.
