MARATHON, NY (607NewsNow) — Marathon Mayor Scott Chamberlain has issued a State of Emergency after severe thunderstorms took a toll on the Village of Marathon on Saturday, July 18th.

Part of the emergency declaration includes a conserve water order for the village, advising residents and businesses that draw water from the village water system to reduce all nonessential water use until the order is lifted. Watering lawns, filling pools, washing vehicles, and other activities that use large quantities of water should be avoided at this time.

A travel advisory for the towns of Marathon, Lapeer, and Virgil has also been issued, citing storm-related hazards as posing potential safety risks to travelers. Downed trees and other debris have been reported in these areas, particularly in the vicinity of McGraw-Marathon Road.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the emergency declaration and monitor official communications from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office, Cortland County, and the Village of Marathon.
